McMansion Makeover
Converting a typical 90s upscale but dated suburban house into something special for clients who entertain often and enjoy their backyard requires a comprehensive plan.
Design Highlights
The goal was to first create a living space that flows effortlessly from the entry and foyer through the kitchen and dining space to the outside.
This meant removing poorly finished random builder grade elements intended to dazzle, and embracing instead a minimalist ethos.
The solution was a grid structure applied to both the interior and exterior of the home - mullion-free square and rectangular windows replaced Palladian and round windows.
Contemporary support columns in a grid format replaced extemporaneous colonial columns, the living room migrated to a one-story, more intimate space while the kitchen and dining area expanded into the larger two-story space.
The result is a breathtaking view from the front door straight through to the beautifully landscaped rear yard and ample green space.
Simple yet exquisite materials including wide plank hardwood floors, glass, metal and a stunning lava tile wall are essential building blocks in the structural grid that organizes use and circulation in this reinvented home.
