House Numbers

Recently I was asked for my thoughts on house numbers as an architectural element. I’m sure they expected me to go on and on about spelling out house numbers, dramatic styles, placement and materials, because house numbers are a design element, and oftentimes homeowners think they can do whatever they want. But in fact there is an International Residential Building Code that specifies everything from the need for legibility, visibility from the street, size, placement and even font (Arabic). Furthermore, most communities have local ordinances that establish and restrict design with specific parameters.

Having said all that, as a former volunteer firefighter, I have some pretty strong opinions on house numbers and identification. Simply put, safety in an emergency response situation is the top priority.

Some ordinances specify placement height from the ground, dictate that no shrubs or landscaping block the numbers, require that house numbers be placed within a certain distance of the front door, or do not allow house numbers to be spelled out.

It's really important to check the local ordinances!

Once I've researched all of this to determine what can and cannot be done, contrast is key. You must be able to see and read the house numbers, especially at twilight or in the middle of the night. Contrast can be accomplished by backlighting the house numbers, or through ambient illumination from a porch light or wall sconces, but I’ve found that glare from an exposed light bulb is often a factor at night, which can make it difficult to read the house numbers. I prefer backlit house numbers as contrast at night is challenging, even with black numbers on a white house, and every second counts in an emergency situation when first responders need to find your home.

Composition of the entry space is important - the style and placement of the house numbers can be used as a detail that balances with the front door, lights, planters, and any other other architectural elements. The house numbers can be placed horizontally or vertically.

Finally, if the only thing about your house that is different from those around you is the house numbers then go for it - this is an opportunity to express your personality.
