Residential architecture is usually judged by appearance: modern, traditional, transitional, rustic, minimal. The more meaningful story is beneath the surface.

Each of these began with a different set of questions — how the clients wanted to live, what the site allowed, what the existing house offered or resisted. A storm. A 1990s developer house with no relationship to its own yard. A mid-century home worth saving.
